How To Reduce The Pain at Night

There are several things you can do to help reduce knee pain at night. Some are fairly simple and can be done in the comfort of your own home and others require a bit more effort:

  1. Consult your doctor – This one is mandatory in our opinion. You may thing that the knee pain will go away, and in some cases you may be right, but what if the root cause is something more serious? You won’t know until you see a proper specialist. Your doctor will send you to the right person, either for a consultation, x-ray, therapy, etc.
  2. Avoid lifting heavy objects – Until the root cause of your knee pain has been identified and fixed, it is highly recommended that you avoid heavy lifting, to avoid put excess weight on your already problematic knees.
  3. Invest in a knee pillow – If you sleep on your side, try placing a pillow between your legs. If you happen to be a back-sleeper, place a pillow under your knees. There are pillows that are specifically designed for this task.

  4. Draw a warm bath – A warm bath, around 20-30 minutes, can help your body, muscles and joints to relax and may actually soothe your aching joints.
  5. Exercise/strenghtening – Take the time to strengthen all the muscles around your knee (hamstrings, quads, calves and the glutes). This will give your knee the extra stability that it needs, for better support in the long run.
  6. Alternate between cold and heat therapy – Depending on the type of knee problem and/or injury you are dealing with, cold/heat therapy may help to reduce the pain, especially if you apply it just before going to bed.
